Hi Mike. To the best of my knowledge, it is perfectly acceptable for a Gentile to pray from a siddur. Any Gentile that attends services at a synagogue (and participates) is reading from a siddur. With that in mind, I can’t imagine that any rabbis would consider it a problem, whatever your intentions regarding conversion. [...]

I posted the below to a relevant forum, too, but it’s particularly pertinent here: Rabbi Menachem Creditor, of Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley, California, has appeared on this website several times of late. Most notably, Avi has highlighted Rabbi Creditor’s podcasts in several other forum threads. Rabbi Creditor weighed in on the “Israeli political problem” [...]

FYI, Avi. I was only able to select from a very few “groups” for this post. Obviously, it doesn’t belong in “Beta Testing,” but neither does it belong in “Reform Judaism,” “Conservative Judaism,” or either of the other two choices. How can we see the full list?

Thanks, Avi. The Atlantic is among my favorite magazines, and I enjoyed reading Menachem Kaiser’s short piece. Like you, ethical Jewish eating is a subject that is very important to me. I have a litany of reasons (some of which are uncommon, though not unheard of within the greater Jewish community), and these various considerations have [...]

Thank you for drawing this piece to me attention, Yair. I appreciate Rabbi Rabinowitz’s sentiment, and I certainly agree that “that which unites us is 10 times greater than that which divides us.” But I am also confused by the piece. On one hand, the rabbi seems to invite “innovation” and stress the legitimacy of [...]

Hi, Yair. Indeed, you’re right. Many on “the European Left, and many of their American sympathizers, refuse to even acknowledge the war crimes committed by the Palestinians or Hezbollah.” This is a gross abuse of the facts, and it is morally/politically irresponsible. I tend to think that this skewing of the conflict is in no [...]

Avi, I’m trying the “Reply” feature again! Yair, I appreciate how the historian Paul Johnson frames the three-legged nature of contemporary world Jewry in his terrific A History of the Jews; there is Israel, the diaspora, and US/North American Jewry. As a JBC, every effort should be made to comprehend what each of these three [...]
