Kosher on the Go Revisited

One thing Avi and I are conscientious about is traveling with kosher snacks so that it’s easier to be kosher outside our home. One challenge can be full meals that are tasty and warm. When we have traveled or even a simple trip to Disneyland, finding kosher can be quite the challenge or quite expensive.

On a recent trip to Disneyland, we spent $10 for a certified kosher burrito. Yes, Disneyland DOES have hot kosher options. If you want hot kosher food, go to any Disneyland restaurant and ask for the kosher menu. Most of the workers knew where to locate it. Then you will speak to the chef and be patient, it took about 30 minutes for us to get 3 burritos and a black bean soup. However, it was kosher, it was hot, so having that option was worth the wait.

I have found two other neat options for what appear to be great kosher meals while traveling.

First I found La Briute Meals. These are perfect for traveling, a day at an amusement park, or any other time you want a hot meal that’s kosher. These are pre-packaged kosher meals that SELF HEAT! This makes it quite easy to do your own meal. Add nice paper plates, some fancy plastic ware, and voila…kosher on the go.

The second site I found is also quite cool. Gourmet Kosher to Go delivers fancy kosher meals to almost anywhere in the world. I was thinking that this is pretty cool if you know you will be at a hotel for a week or two. You can pre-order and have your items delivered. Not a bad deal. Of course, I have yet to try this company so I’m simply going by their site for now. Definitely check out their site but for an idea on how they do REAL food shipped, here is something off their site:

Once an individual meal is prepared and packed, it’s batched together, meaning the entire order is packed in an insulated shipping container; and then it’s placed in an ultra freezer overnight. (The professional term is Flash Freezing).

The morning after, the shipping container is taken out of the freezer; we add a coolant to the shipping container and seal it. We use either dry ice, or high grade ice packs depending on the size of the order, its destination and season of the year.

  1. The La Briute Meals are great for preparing for disasters such as hurricanes.  You can also get Kosher self-heating meals from My Own Meal, which supplies the US Army.  After Hurricane Katrina, I found out a lot about MREs: Meals Ready to Eat.

  2. I’d never seen this video! How cool :D I don’t have a car, but I always try to keep some goods in my bag when I’m out — dried mangoes, pretzels (the thin crisp pretzels from Trader Joe’s are seriously low points on WW for a lot of them), and definitely the cereal bars from Trader Joe’s!
